Make Room for Green

I love fashion as much as I love design. I grew up reading Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, and Seventeen. My grandmother would get me a yearly subscription, and I couldn’t wait to check the mailbox to see if it had arrived. I was fortunate to complete a year at the Fashion Institute of NY, my final year of college, as an independent study. I attended fashion week and learned about the science of textiles and how to create custom clothing patterns. Although I chose interior design as my career and I like to incorporate fashion into the planning of spaces, I think both fields overlap and influence culture. If you're interested in making sustainable fashion choices, start by researching brands like Patagonia or Reformation that prioritize eco-friendly materials and transparency. You can also try shopping secondhand, swapping clothes with friends, or choosing timeless pieces that last. Small changes like these can make a big difference in reducing your fashion footprint.

It’s exciting to see more interior designers and fashion designers combining luxury and sustainable practices in their products. Leading sustainable fashion designers such as Stella McCartney, who champions luxury without leather and fur, and Eileen Fisher, known for timeless design and circularity, play a key role in promoting sustainable fashion. Innovators like Mura Hoffman (mindful ready-to-wear), Christopher Raeburn (upcycled materials), and brands like Patagonia, Reformation, Girlfriend Collective, and Amour Vert, all focus on eco-friendly materials, ethical production, waste reduction, and transparency to offer stylish, plant-conscious clothing. Personally, I've started choosing brands that align with my values, which makes me feel more connected to my wardrobe and the planet. Who are your favorite fashion and interior designers? Are they going green? I'd love to hear about your favorite sustainable brands or designers-sharing ideas helps us all grow in our eco-conscious journey.
